Regional Safety Task Force Meeting
Please join us for the next Regional Safety Task Force (RSTF) meeting, which will be devoted to distracted driving, continuing our focus on the Safe System approach to safety. Guest speakers will discuss the role of behavioral safety in the Safe System approach and results from a recent case study in identifying distracted drivers in New Jersey. We will also review DVRPC’s application to USDOT’s Safe Streets and Roads For All grant program.

We are pleased to welcome the following panelists to present on behavioral safety in the Safe System approach and distracted driving:

Dr. Mohammad Jalayer, Rowan University
Dr. Jalayer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rowan University and Associate Director in ITS at the Center for Research & Education in Advanced Transportation Engineering Systems (CREATES). Dr. Jalayer will be presenting his research from a study titled “A Novel Approach to Identify Distracted Drivers: A Case Study in New Jersey.”.

Eric Heitmann, NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety
Currently serving as director of NJ’s Division of Highway Traffic Safety, Mr. Heitmann is also a 25-year veteran of the New Jersey State Police, during which time he rose to the rank of Major. Mr. Heitmann will be presenting on the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) study “Putting the Pieces Together: Addressing the Role of Behavioral Safety in the Safe System Approach.”

After the presentations and Q&A, RSTF members will break into groups to discuss strategies to address distracted driving in the region.
